Question: Hello

I have qestion about - internal hernias
As it is rare or small that dont cause any problems !

Internal hernias are rare. They are found in 0.2% to 0.9% of autopsies, but a substantial proportion of these remain asymptomatic.

https://www.sciencedirect.com/topics/medicine-and-dentistry/internal-hernia

But i understand ufter colon cancer surgery asymptomatic internal hernias are common

IH was noted to be much higher in the postoperative CT scans occurring in 22 of 105 (21%) patients.
https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/0000/

So as i understand internal hernias are common after colon cancer or bariatric surgery

But they are very rare after other bowel surgery like Appendicitis

and other abdomenal surgery

Thank you very much

Brief Answer:
True to some extent. CT scan has changed the picture of diagnosis.

Detailed Answer:
Hi.
Nice to hear from you.
Noted the history.
What you have noted is to the point.
But these are studies.
Which in our long experience of practical surgical life is very rare.
Many are diagnosed on table on exploration - open or by laparoscopy.
But with the advent of Contrast enhanced CT scan study of abdomen the pre-operative diagnosis has become easier than before. The degree of suspicion of such a problem is also less as such conditions are less common.
But also to be noted is the fact that there can be just an incidental finding, particularly after surgeries that you have mentioned above. These may not be symptomatic.
I hope this additional information helps you to see into the practical problems.
Please let me know.
