Hello I Have An Odd Question.. Last Night I Had

Question: Hello I have an odd question.. last night I had a candle lit and I blew it out before bed. This morning I had woken up with black in my nose and black in my phlegm only after I woke up. I cleaned my nose and now my snot and mucus are both clear. I just recently searched some stuff about it and am now a bit anxious about the black in my phlegm this morning. Should I be concerned? Like I said it is clear now and it was only black after I woke up from the soot being in my room.

Brief Answer:
No need to worry but avoid long and frequent exposure

Detailed Answer:
Hello,
Thank you for using "Ask a doctor" service.

You should not worry very much about what you are describing. The hair in the nose plays the role to collect every dust or smoke and not allow it to go to the lungs. Since the nose produces also mucus, those dust or smoke particles mix up with the mucus and get out of the nose in the form of black snots. Of course you should be careful to not be very frequent and to much exposed to it as it may cause lung problems in the future. The hair in the nose dose a good job but people tent to breath sometimes from the mouth too.

Hope this is helpful. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Kind regards, Dr. Klarida Papaqako, General and Family physician.
