Hello. I Began Having Genitalia Warts Appear A Few Months

default
Posted on Sun, 15 Nov 2020
Question: Hello. I began having genitalia warts appear a few months ago. It began at the bottom of the penis head, between the foreskin. I was prescribed podofilox topical solution, which I have used to get rid of the warts and any flare ups that continue to appear. They recently started appearing in the tip of the penis, in between the urethra. Is it safe to use the solution there? Is there a cure for HPV/genital warts? Does masturbation or not being circumcised make a difference on the flare ups?

Brief Answer:
Regarding genital warts

Detailed Answer:
Hello and welcome to ask a doctor service. I have gone through your query and noted your concern.

You may use imiquimod 5% cream for urethral warts and for those at tip or rather better to use 5% fluorouracil cream which is infact recommended for urethral warts and warts at tip. In most HPV infection usually resolves within 2 years of being infected. Treatment of visible warts helps eradicate infection, however, still warts may recur after years of being wart free in few. Recurrences are managed accordingly. HPV warts are more common in uncircumcised males as compared to circumcised though I am not sure if masturbation has an effect on flare-up but it may aid local spread of infection and influence subsequent flare-ups

Hope I have answered your query.Let me know if you need any more assistance.

Thank you for the detailed response! Will I need a prescription for those medications? Also a few last questions if I may,
Am I prone to infect my female partner in the future even after the 2 year mark? I’m currently single and not sexually active, but I am worried that even if a prolong period without a flare up of any signs of warts, I can still infect my future partner.

Brief Answer:
Regarding HPV infection

Detailed Answer:
Hi.
Yes, those are prescription medications and should be used under supervision, as irritation is a common side effect.
The infectivity risk is more with any visible warts. Majority of those with no recurrences after 18-24 months are considered cured though a few may still relapse. After you are clear of this HPV window you should still regularly use a condom.
Take care
