Question: Hello, I am 25 years old and deal with some pretty intense health anxiety issues. The last 48 hours or so I feel like the left side of my body has gone numb in a way. From head to toe. When I scratch my forehead, arm, or leg, I feel it so numb isn’t the right word exactly but it just feels disconnected and I was just trying to figure out what this could be.

Brief Answer:
A feature of anxiety, acute treatment is needed.

Detailed Answer:
Hello and welcome to "Ask a Doctor" service.

I have read your query in detail.

Paresthesias (i.e) numbness in different parts of the body are a possible feature of anxiety disorder.

Acute anxiety episodes may justify your symptoms, and, in such case, an anxiolytic drug (benzodiazepines such as lorazepam, clonazepam) are necessary to be used for rapid control of the symptoms.

After the treatment of the acute phase, you should see a Psychologist for long term treatment.

Please discuss with your Doctor for these issues and for the prescription of acute anxiolytic drugs.

Hope you found the answer helpful.

Let me know if I can assist you further.

Thanks for quick response. I have dealt with migraines my whole life and take medicine for it. Should I reach out to the doctor who prescribed me the medicine as well or is this most likely anxiety-based?

Brief Answer:
You can reach out for that Doctor.

Detailed Answer:
Welcome back.

If you have in possession drugs to treat migraine you can use it, because migraine may cause rarely sensibility issues too.

I think that antianxiety drugs are necessary also since you suffer from health anxiety.

The Doctor who prescribed migraine drugs may also prescribe acute antianxiety drugs if he agrees with the fact that anxiety should be treated as well.

Hope I helped you.

Regards

Okay great sounds good. I was just more concerned this was a deeper neurological issue. I’ve never had this happen before and I wasn’t sure what this was. Should I monitor this for a few days, and if it doesn’t get better schedule an appt to get a more in depth look with a neurologist?

Answered below.

Detailed Answer:
Hello again.

If you already feel better, or there is no worsening of the symptoms, your condition waits.

If these issues repeat, you should see a Psychologist and a Neurologist for a correct understanding of your issues.

Hope this helps.

Take care.
