Question: Hello Doctor,

I am positing this questions on behalf of my father. He is often getting sick since 4 years and for every 2 months he visits near by clinic to get iron since his blood count keeps getting dropped. We thought to get a specialist advice hence got all the reports from one of the hospital in XXXXXXX After reviewing the reports doctors said there is nothing wrong but they asked to take food properly.

I am attaching the reports now, I appreciate it if you could go through the reports and provide with any suggestions in terms of food and what has to be followed to maintain good blood count.

Thank you.

Brief Answer:
He needs iron therapy.Correcting such low levels with diet is not possible.

Detailed Answer:
Hello and thanks for choosing "Ask a Doctor" service for your query sir,
I am Dr Kumar Ramesh a Gastroenterologist and have gone through his reports.
Your relatives hemoglobin count is 7mg/dl while his peripheral blood smear show he is having gross iron deficiency anemia.
The point of correcting it with diet only is just a sham.
6 mg/dl of hemoglobin is an indication of blood transfusion(check it on any medical literature).
From my side it's not a good suggestion on part of the consulting doctor.

Suggestions-
Injection ferritin should be given slowly over 60 minutes. This would increase the amount of stored iron in body( Ferritin is the form in which iron is stored).
Secondly iron polypeptide(Not suphate or ascorbate) tablets like PP26 12 mg should be given to him initially for 3 months followed by 6 mg for 3 month. They are protein bounding form of iron and are very well absorbed by the body.
Now along with it give him green leafy vegetables,Red meat like goat, fruits like apple pomograte and Carrot beetroot juice.
You can discuss the answer with your treating doctor and can self Google also that at 6mg/dl patient needs blood transfusion for satisfaction.

He is having severe anemia.

Closing note
PP 26 12 mg once daily( would get it easily in XXXXXXX )
Inj ferritin should be given in hospital setting.
One question-
Treating doctor is MD medicine or Hematologist or Gastroenterologist?
Hope I was helpful.
Follow ups are welcome.
Thank you.
