Question: Hi! I used to be a huge pot head. During the summer of 2012, every week i smoked about 2 and a 1/2 quarters of weed for about 2 months. At one point i started losing hair and didn't know what the reason was. Later i found out that whenever i smoke pot i loss hair, It was around September when i stopped smoking. I stayed sober from marijuana until December. I took only one hit and saw the significant difference right away when i saw my forehead in the mirror. And that was the last time i ever smoked. But today my friend said she was making pot brownies and it made me wonder. I know that whatever it is, smoking is a bad way to comsume things. That's why not only marijuana, but i also quit tobacco and shisha which i'm pretty proud of. So the thing i was wondering was would consuming marijuana orally affect hair loss?

Hello
Thanks for writing to us, and congratulations for leaving the habit of smoking.
Regarding your query, whether marijuana can cause hair loss.
There are no such case reports, but this relation between marijuana and hair loss can be explained scientifically as follows.
Marijuana increases the level of endocrine secretion in body, especially that of adrenaline.
This raised level of hormones act as a stress to the hair and in order to protect itself the hair goes into a dormant stage called as telogen phase.
This is a no return point for hair, that is the hair must be shed.
However the hair bulb which produces new hair is safe, and hence you get a new hair once again on stopping marijuana.
Hope I explained you the entire detail.
I advise you to better avoid marijuana in all forms.
You are a person of great determination.
When you have left smoking, this must be quiet easy for you.

Let me know, if you have any other doubts.
Thank you
