Does Scabies Spread To Infants?

default
Posted on Mon, 29 Jan 2024
Question: My 3 year daughter had Scabies and consulted a doctor for treatment. He gave cream to apply on the body and it happened 3 weeks back. But now we took our daughter to another doctor for different treatment and we asked about Scabies and he mentioned that the entire family has to be treated. We noticed that myself (34 Years) and my son (5 Years) have itching recently and I feel that it may be connected. I want to understand whether everyone is treated. I want to consult a dermatologist on the same.

Brief Answer:
All household members are typically treated at the same time.

Detailed Answer:
Hello,
Yes, because someone may have scabies for several weeks without showing any symptoms, typically all household members of someone who is diagnosed with scabies is treated at the same time to prevent an endless cycle of transmission and reinfestation. I assume the cream that you were given was permethrin, this should be applied to the whole body from the neck to the soles of the feet including underneath the fingernails and toenails. This is typically repeated after one to two weeks to eliminate any mites. Scabies can also be treated with ivermectin tablets. Again, this should be done for the entire household.

I hope that helps, please let me know if you have any other questions about that, and I would be glad to discuss it with you further.
Thanks.
