Does One Have Ligaments After Undergoing Knee Replacement?

default
Posted on Wed, 1 Jun 2016
Question: I have a new knee replacement from 8 weeks ago and hurt my knee, twisting it. I saw my orthopedic surgeon and after examining my knee and xray he said it was "loose" but it should clear up with physical therapy. I assumed it was the knee appliance. My physical therapist said that it was the ligament. Do I still have ligaments after knee replacement? My knee replacement went exceptionally well and didn't hurt and I zoomed into walking quickly. Now my knee really hurts. I have Tylenol3 for pain I take sparingly. I ice the knee. How long can this last? Any other suggestions to make this heal?

Brief Answer:
I don't understand how this has to do with the ligaments

Detailed Answer:
Hello ma'am and welcome.

Thank you for writing to us.

I have gone through your query with diligence and would like you to know that I am here to help. If you underwent a total knee replacement, then you will not have any ligaments, and this could just probably be some fluid accumulation (synovitis) that should subside with time. This can last for about a week or even a month at times, but it should subside eventually if there is nothing seriously wrong (only if).

In such a scenario, physical therapy is the best. After an X-ray, if the implants are found the be lose, then a revisit surgery may be required to replace the implants and use a cement fill to make sure the implants don't become loose the next time; but that is for the future, and only if they are found to be loose. For now, elevation of the legs, icing the knees and also physical therapy should do the job.

I hope you find my response both helpful and informative. Please feel free to write back to me for any further clarifications, I am always here to help.

Best wishes.
