Posted on Tue, 13 Oct 2015
Question: Dr XXXXXXX I have been taking bp medicines for nearly 20 years now.At present I take Nebicard 5mg in the morning alongwith one Thelma 80 & another Thelma 80 in the evening.Of late I am finding that Thelma 80 is not helping me reduce the bp at all.For example if my bp in the evening is 150/90 & I take a Thelma 80 & take bp after a few hours it is either same or marginally higher. Please advise if I should change the medication. Please also clarify what is the effect of alcohol on bp.I am on regular drinks in the evening.

Brief Answer:
Limit alcohol, telma h 80 in morning instead of plain telma.

Detailed Answer:
Hello, I am Dr. Mody and I will be addressing your concern.
As I start, I would like to say that both the drugs team and nebicard are good drugs, because they not only decrease the blood pressure but also protects the heart, brain, kidneys from the I'll effect of blood pressure, which is our primary aim, so you physician is good in his choice of medication.
However my thought would be to add a drug to the above two rather than just increase the dose (as you are taking the highest dose of telma recommended) as we can target another mechanism of blood pressure and hence control the pressure better, also we have to understand that as our age increases the elasticity of our arteries decrease and so the dose of antihypertensive may change.
Now alcohol in any form increase the blood pressure, and as a doctor I can only advice you to try omit the same. However considering you must be taking it from a long time. Decrease the amount to less than 60 ml of wiskey per day. That should be ok.
So much final recommendation
Morning take tab nebicard in the morning, along with tab telma H 80mg and at night presently just plain telma 80 at night, if the blood pressure is still the same by one week we will change
Tab. telma Am (80) at night.
The above will bring your pressure under control for sure.
