Do Sharp Pain, Coughing And Gagging Indicate An Object Stuck In The Throat?
Question: Hi,
For the last 3 days I feel like some food or small sharp object is stuck in my throat. It isn't sore but every now and then it makes me cough suddenly and I feel like gagging. I constantly feel it. I also feel like I whistle when I exhale but only at the time the thing in throat is irritating me. I don't know if anything specifically was in my throat or if it was whether it has gone and is scratched. I also do get LPR and sinus but this doesn't feel like either. Please advise if it could be something stuck, or an infection or what. It is not the feeling of a lump in throat like anxiety but a sharp thing in the same spot that won't go.

Brief Answer:
Chlorhexidine gargles disappear the sensation
Detailed Answer:
Hi,
I appreciate your situation right now. First a bout of one litre water quickly flushes it down the throat into the stomach. Ideally local anesthetic gargles or chlorhexidine gargles without dilution should work better.
If you do not have them I suggest to do warm salt water gargles.
They help to disappear the sensation.
If the sensation does not disappear overnight there can be something really stuck out there. You need to see the doctor.
Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

So how do I know if something was / is stuck or if it is just irritated from something previously stuck?
Could it be any other cause like the reflux or sinus or a virus
So it isn't an upper respiratory infection?
It isn't acid reflux?
It isn't sinus or allergy causing irritated throat and dry cough?

Brief Answer:
Throat irritation.
Detailed Answer:
Hi,
Acid reflux and irritated throat from infection can cause such feeling.
It is difficult to pinpoint the reason of irritation by just knowing symptoms.
It needs a clinical examination and maybe Xray to check if something is stuck right there.
However, gargles would help lose the sensation and help eradicate mild to moderate infection.
If it is reflux, take PRILOSEC OTC, before breakfast every day for 10 days. That treats the hard reflux too.
Hope I have answered your query.
Take care
