Question: Dear Doctor,
My father aged 67 has Blood urea 22 m/dl and Blood uric acid 8m/dl and he is having severe pain in Toe with swelling from last 3 months ( On / off ) .Can you please suggest best medicine .

Hello and welcome to Ask A Doctor service.

I have reviewed your query and here is my advice.

He may be suffering from gout. In such a scenario we need to control level of uric acid and bring it below 6.

In case there are no contraindications he can start with a small dose of allopurinol (zyloric ) 100 mg, this medicine helps to lower levels of uric acid. However it will not take care of the immediate pain. For that either pain medication like diclofenac or small dose of steroid like omnacortil will need to be taken.

As the levels of uric acid reduce with medication , recurrent attacks of pain will not happen.
Along with that restriction of alcohol, sugary drinks and non vegetarian food will be there.
