Question: Dear Doctor,
I have a question regarding my father.
He is suffering from sugar problems & because of that, his injuries won't heal.
His feet were operated 2years back had imputed his right foot thumb, from that day his wounds are not healing properly.
He is on medicine but the outcome is still nil.

So can you guide me on what diet should he follow and what medicine should he use for his health?

Brief Answer:
He needs medicine and strict diet control for diabetes

Detailed Answer:
Hello and welcome to Ask A Doctor service.

I have reviewed your query and here is my advice.

What are his fasting blood sugar levels and HbA1C levels?

In case of injuries in a known case of uncontrolled diabetes, it is advised that the patient has strict dietary control of high glycemic index (sugary) foods and also take medicine to control blood sugar levels.

In my opinion he should be given regular insulin for atleast few days and also get examined by a surgeon for other causes of non-healing wounds. Also stronger antibiotics might need to be started.

Regarding diet, avoid the high gycemic index foods like potato, banana, grapes, custard apple, sugar and foods that contain sugar, refined cereals and its products like white bread and corn bread, white rice, corn and its products. Also the regular milk flavoring powders like chocolate mixes etc. have added sugar and thus high GI values.

Fiber is important and you must ensure a liberal intake of vegetables and salads. These foods provide fiber which delays the absorption of sugar and helps in maintaining the blood sugar levels.

Low GI foods: Low fat dairy, vegetables and fruits (except those mentioned in the high GI list), whole grains and cereals, salads, oats, barley, pulses and non-sugary peanut butter.

The intake of fluids should be maintained to approximately 3-4 L per day to avoid dehydration. Cleaner water should be taken.

Hope this helps. Let me know if I can assist you further.
