Question: Dear Doctor,
I am 36 year old Male. I am g6pd deficient so I take medicines only after doctors consultation.
3 days back I was having a bit of sore throat and little cough.
Suddenly since yesterday I got a bit more coughing and throat irritation.
And at night I got a full bad body ache and a slight fever of 100. I only had Dabur honeytus and night before sleep.
In Morning I felt only a bit ok and then the same thing. I felt week and body ache, mild fever and throat irritation and cough and little white spot like bulgum.
I went to my local doctor who gave me an injection and told to take Augmentin duo 625 twice a day and gave me his 2 local tablet medicine 3 times a day.
I felt a bit good in afternoon but now in evening I am feeling a bit feverish again with a bit of weakness and body ache.
I have no vomiting or loose motion symptoms.
Pls advise

Brief Answer:
URTI

Detailed Answer:
Hi Zubin.
Welcome to Ask a doctor.
G6PD enzyme deficiency exposes the red cells unprotected against the oxidative stress and there may be significant haemolysis and jaundice on exposure to a certain group of drugs.
You are suffering from upper respiratory tract infection.Continue with antibiotics.Augmentin is safe for you.
Take tablet Paracetamol 500 mg or ibuprofen (Tylelol) s.o.s for your fever and bodyache.
Do not take aspirin.
Do hot saline gargles and take warm fluids and soft diet.
Antihistamines can safely be taken for coryza symptoms.

Usually these symptoms take a few days to settle down - around 3-5 days. If you don't get better within this time period, better to have a follow up.

Hope that I have answered your query.
Stay healthy.
Regards.

Thanks doctor,
I have 1 query that can URTI cause fever of 101.6 or 102 and body ache as I thought it's a throat infection.
Secondly I am getting a bit of bowel movement more frequently due to Augmentin 625..
Secondly instead of crocin can i take Lanol ER for fever and body ache and at what doses.
Thanks
Zubin

Brief Answer:
URTI,G6PD DEFICIENCY,DRUG INDUCED DIARROEA

Detailed Answer:
Hi Zubin....

URTI is upper respiratory tract infection.Throat infection is also a part of spectrum of URTI.You can have cough syrup and soothing lozenges for faster recovery.
Of course,an acute infection of throat, pharynx, trachea and bronchus can cause high grades of fever, malaise, body aches and exhaustion.
Do tepid sponging for high fevers (use tap water.Use of cold water can be counter productive) as it is free from any side effects and enhance heat loss.
Yes, instead of Cronin, you can take Lanol ER for fever and body ache as it is extended release form of paracetamol and drug is released in circulation in a slow and timed manner.
The ER paracetamol formulations have been shown to be statistically and therapeutically non inferior and equally effective to IR paracetamol.
In adults, the usual dose is 2 tablets per day (i.e 500mg or 650mg,depending on the body weight). The minimum dosing interval should be of 4 hours between the doses. You should take 650 mg BD(12 Hrly).
The total dose of paracetamol per day should not exceed 4g per day.
Aggreviated bowel movements and diarroea is a common side effect of Augmentin 625.You can take probiotics and commercial lactobacillus or increase the intake of yogurt, buttermilk to counter this side effect.
Stay healthy.
Regards.
