default
Posted on Fri, 25 Nov 2022
Question: Dear doctors,
*This question is about my brother (32 yrs old). Last month (June) on 26th he got high fever (was 101 /102 degree F) along with body pain & joints pain. He went to our family physician. the doctor told its due to viral arthritis. & he gave an injection for fever, body pain & few tablets like paracetamol & antibiotic (tablets for 3 days).
*His fever reduced in two days & body pain, joints pain too reduced. but from past one month joints pain is coming and going on a regular interval.
*Only wrist bone, ankles, foot pains. this keeps repeating like once or twice in a week. that too the exact parts pain (wrist bone, ankles, foot). He keeps going to the same family doctor & he told this is due to viral arthritis & gives injection. then no pain for few more days. it repeats again.
*my question to you is, is it normal to get joints pain often & is it because of viral fever which he got? (the doctor told its viral arthritis).

Brief Answer:
Viral arthralgia?

Detailed Answer:

Hi,

I empathize with your brother's situation. There are some viral infections that causes painful joints (arthralgia's) and those aching joints persists for few months. It seems like your brother has been infected by one such virus.

It would be worthwhile to visit a doctor and get the joints examined to rule out other possibilities and to understand the severity of affection. If necessary he can be started on regular pain medications (instead of as and when necessary injections). A short course of steroids may be necessary in a few cases.

In most cases over a period of months, symptoms will resolve. In the meanwhile, I will encourage him to eat healthy. Calcium supplements and healthy lifestyle will also benefit him.

Hope this helps. Let me know if you need clarifications.
