Brief Answer:
There is a small chance of infection through the contact with the eye.

Detailed Answer:
Hello and Welcome to ‘Ask A Doctor’ service.
I have reviewed your query and here is my advice.

I understand your concern.

Rabies infection can be spread through the saliva of infected animals.

The most common way of spreading the virus is by being bitten from the infected animal.

In rare cases, rabies can be spread when infected saliva gets into a mucous membrane, such as the eyes.

It still remains as a possibility.

So, I recommend to maintain that animal in observation for 10 days to check for signs and symptoms of rabies.

In case of rabies symptoms of the animal I suggest to follow up with your doctor for the rabies shot.

If it's determined the animal is healthy, you won't need the shots.

Hope I have answered your query.

Brief Answer:
The observation period of the dog is ten days.

Detailed Answer:
Hi again dear,

The dog should be maintained in observation for ten days.

If the dog does not have any rabies symptoms during this period of time it is probably healthy.

So you should not be worried that the dog disappeared.

There is no need for a rabies shot.

Hope it helps.

Take care dear,

Thank you very much in UK doctors say 14 days not 10 but I have seen before 10 days as well. Which one is correct ?

Brief Answer:
10 days are enough to observe the dog.

Detailed Answer:
Hi again dear,

Based on studies evidence, the biting dog should be watched closely for 10 days following the bite.

If it was rabid at the time of the bite, it should be dead before 10 days have passed.

So, 10 days are enough to observe the dog.

Hope my answer was helpful.

Kind regards!
