Can Upper GI Endoscopy Be Performed On A Person After Sedation?
I recently had an upper GI endoscopy, with propofal. I did not feel a thing. I was fast asleep. If you were to be admitted into the hospital and they did the same thing, would they give you the luxury of this? Or would you have to ask for propofal? And how would you ensure that you had that complete lack of awareness?
You need to ask for deeper sedation

Hi,
Thanks for posting your query.
I am Dr.R.K and I am pleased to assist you.
The protocol varies among different hospitals.
An upper GI endoscopy is a simple procedure that lasts for only a few minutes.
Most often, it is done without sedation. The advantage is there is no recovery period and the individual can return to normal activities immediately.
The procedure is sometimes done with conscious sedation which means the individual will be aware of the procedure but will not feel the discomfort. This is done if the individual asks for it or if not cooperative for the procedure or if the procedure takes a longer time to be completed.
Deep sedation with complete lack of awareness of procedure is usually not done for diagnostic upper GI endoscopy. You may have to ask for it.
I hope that answers your question.
