Can Chronic Foot Spasms Be Due To Electrolyte Imbalance?

Question: I have been having foot spasms for well over 2 years and I have not been able to find permanent relief. I am an 82 year old man and except for this and a knee problem I believe I am in pretty good health. The pain started in my right foot after 2 complete knee replacements over a years time (May 2013-June 2014). There were 3 other knee operations and 1 opening for drainage during that period. I also contacted MRSA. Needless to say I certainly do not have a perfect right knee. The spasms started in my right foot after these operations and all the doctors thought it was coming from the knee operations but one of your doctors suggested that I look elsewhere and I did. I found a Doctor of Chiropractic that agreed with you and after x-rays said that problem was coming from my lower back and that was why I had so much swelling in both my legs and that they could help me. He informed that if he was correct that the pain could get more severe or even move to different places with treatment. Let me say that he was delighted when the pain went to my left foot for he said that proved that we were in the right spot. I searched for a place that was less expensive and thought I had found it. As I started the the treatment with a person in which I have a great deal of confidence in he started to give me that part which included the electric shock treatment and checked my records and found that I had had cancer of the prostrate and that it had moved to my hip. He cut the machine off and said that they did not give people electric shock under those circumstances. He suggested that I see a doctor that he had a great deal of confidence in and I did. He said that I did not have a back problem and see a foot doctor. I informed him that I had already seen 2 foot doctors and been informed that nothing in my feet was causing the problem. He made an appointment for me with another foot doctor who made the same decision-problem not from the feet. I then saw my pain management doctor who had informed me earlier that he could not help me until he knew where the pain was coming from. I guess he had seen the X-rays taken before because the location that he pointed out was very close to that the treatment area that Doctor of Chiropractic was trying to pinpoint. He gave me a sacroiliac joint block with steroids in 2 places and the pain continued for 2 days - then no pain in left foot and some pain in right foot. Then last night the pain in the right foot was unbearable. I need help

Brief Answer:
Likely to be due to electrolyte imbalance

Detailed Answer:
Thanks for asking on Health Care Magic.

I have gone carefully through your query and understand your concerns. The spasms could be due to electrolyte imbalance which is common at your age. Taking juicy fruits like citrus fruits as well as bananas should help since they contain plenty of potassium. If you get a spasm take one immediately and you are expected to get relief.

It would also be worthwhile to get your vitamin D level checked.

Let me know if you have any further queries.
