Brief Answer:
Yes...It's called bile reflux which changes the pH of the mouth.

Detailed Answer:
Hello and thanks for choosing 'Ask A Doctor' service for your query,
I've seen your details and I appreciate your concerns,

You have written that HIDA says that anything above 38% is normal but the upper limit is 80%.
If gallbladder EF is more then 80% then this would lead to regurgitation of bile back into the stomach...

Hence increasing pressure in the stomach leading to gastritis and bile reflux. This changes the pH of the mouth causing the change in taste.

Yes, you should go for gallbladder removal surgery but as HIDA is a less specific test I would suggest you go for an MRCP study in which MRI is used to diagnose any problem in gallbladder...It's much more sensitive and specific compared to HIDA.

However symptomatically you are having bile reflux hence causing a metallic taste in the mouth.

Hope I was helpful,
Thank you!

I am unable to have an MRI as I have metal in my chest from a war wound. Is there another test that I should be requesting? I've had all kind of tests trying to get a handle around my stomach issues. Gastric Emptying Scan, Stress test EKG, Upper Gastrointestinal Endoscopy, and more that all appeared to come back normal. The HIDA scan reader did make a note of ''incidental note is made of enterogastric reflux''. They also said GBEF was almost 100% The reader said my GBEF was normal! I am under the care of the XXXXXXX VA Health Care System. Any thoughts on how I can convince these powers to be that I do have a valid medical issue?

Hi there,
Yes you can ask your doctor for ERCP. Its an alternative test if MRCP can't be done.Endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography (ERCP) is a procedure that combines upper gastrointestinal (GI) endoscopy and x-rays to find and treat problems of the bile and pancreatic ducts or If Doctors are not ready a repeat HIDA can be done.
