default
Posted on Fri, 22 Jan 2016
Question: I have been suffering from IBS since 2007..I consulted several renowned gastro who prescribed mostly anti spasmodic and anti depressent..but I hardly get any relief, except once I was prescribed ELDICET...that was relived my problem...but in 2013 same problem was relapsed.... Since then I didn't get any relief from ELDICET..then I consulted a doctor who prescribed Rifaximin..rifaximin works very well but the problem is when I stopped the medicine, problem relapsed.. I have tried a lot of PROBIOTIC but hardly get any relief.. One day I found a journal where I got know about L GLUTAMINE..I was so desperate to calm down my symptom, I thought I should get it a try..I bought a 250gms pack from a body building supplement store..after using 10g per day, 5g in d morning at empty stomach and 5g before dinner..I find it's a very effective..it reduces my cramping, reduce the tendency to go to toilet, fatigueness, headache, vomiting tendency, shivering, and the most important is severe acitidity problem.. Now i lead my normal life..
But my question is that
1. is L Glutamine safe for use?
2.how many months I should continue?
3. What would be the exact dosage that I should follow?
4.will it causes any problem in future?

I'm very much tensed as I have very little idea about this stuff..though it hepls me a lot, I don't have enough courage to use it further..
Please suggest me what should I do..
I can't live my whole life with IBS anymore.. I'm only 29 male unmarried.. And Im 63kgs...

Brief Answer:
L Glutamine is safe to use

Detailed Answer:
Hello, Sir.

I can certainly understand your concerns.

Yes, L Glutamine relatively is safe to use as it is an amino acid supplement.

You can continue it for another 3 months.

On intermittent basis, you can use it on a long-term basis as well.

The exact dosage is 10 gm/day to be divided into 3 parts in a day.

It does not cause much side effects and it is relatively safe.Only thing is you need to take 2 to 3 liters of water a day.

Post your further queries if any.
Thanks

Thank you for your quick reply..
Basically I don't have any liver and kidney problem, tests were done a few months ago..but in 2002 I was diagonised with jaundice though it was not so severe, lots of medical tests were done including USG of whole ab , citiscan of whole ab etc..everything was normal..
Now the point is that despite all the medical reports within normal limits, I'm suffering a lot...most of the medicines I was given by the doctors didn't suit me..
Sometimes I find that even probiotics like s. Boulardii, vsl3 make my symptoms worse..
Now what medication should I follow other than l glutamine??
I have tried LIBRAX several times..it was good..but after using it for 3-4 days, I found sudden diarrhea..I don't understand why this medicine leads me diarehha when it is used as anti diarrheal..
Is there any relation of drinking water?? I have a water purifier of aquaguard company..should I use packaged mineral waters??

Brief Answer:
ALOSETRON drug can be a suitable alternative.

Detailed Answer:
Hello, Sir.

I can certainly understand your concerns.

I apologize for the delayed response owing to my work schedule.

Diet is a corner stone in the management of IBS.

I suggest few guidelines here.

1. Fiber supplementation may improve symptoms of constipation and diarrhea.

2. Judicious water intake is recommended in patients who predominantly experience constipation.

3. Caffeine avoidance may limit anxiety and symptom exacerbation.

4. Legume avoidance may decrease abdominal bloating.

5. Lactose and/or fructose should be limited or avoided in patients with these contributing disorders.

6. Take care to supplement calcium while limiting the lactose intake.

7. Diets low in FODMAPs (fermentable oligosaccharides, disaccharides, monosaccharides, and polyols) hold particular interest in reducing symptoms of irritable bowel syndrome.

LIBRAX is not always suitable for treating diarrhea related IBS.

I generally recommend Oral pills of ALOSETRONE for 3 weeks to make a symptomatic improvement.

Please check with your physician if he shares my view and if can prescribe these pills to you.

Aquaguard water is not associated with IBS symptoms and you can continue its usage.

Brief Answer:
Probiotics to be taken post meal.

Detailed Answer:
Hello, Sir.

I can certainly understand your concerns.

I apologize for the delayed response owing to my work schedule.

Yes, EQUIREX can be a reasonable drug at this point. But you have already experienced its effects, as it is a combo drug in LIBRAX.

Probiotics' have to be taken pidt meal each day. Twice a day seems to be a reasonable option.

Please check with your physician if he shares my view.

Thank you.
