Question: Hi...Having a sleeve gastrectomy in 2 months...debating between having cholecystectomy vs taking ursodiol to prevent gallstones and eventual gall bladder removal. No hx of stones but literature suggests incidence of this problem after WLS is 25% or more. Don't want second surgery but see long list of potential side effects of med. Could have cholecystectomy during WLS & be done with it. What do you think? I'm morbidly obese, BMI 44, 64 yrs, male, s/p 10 yrs CABG x 3........

Brief Answer:
Cholecystectomy recommended without gallstones with WLS.

Detailed Answer:

Hello,

* There is a definite percentage of cases of gallstones after weight loss surgery.
* As per my clinical experience as a surgeon, I recommend my morbidly obese patients to go for cholecystectomy together to prevent second surgery to avoid medications of gall stone prevention.

Hope this information will clarify your doubt.

Wish you a fine recovery.
