Blood Work Taken During A Yearly Physical Last Month Disclosed

Posted on Mon, 22 Feb 2021
Question: Blood work taken during a yearly physical last month disclosed a GFR of 57. My physician didn't appear to be very concerned, but later I read on the interne that a GFR of 57 was indicative of stage 3 kidney disease. My question is am I very ill, and is this GFR reading very serious? I am very worried. I am overweight but otherwise in good health. The remainder of my blood work was normal as was my urinalysis.

Brief Answer:
Perhaps you are dehydrated

Detailed Answer:
Hi Eugenetumolo,

A GFR of 57 is certainly low, but probably only suggestive of transient kidney dysfunction.
Do you take any medicine?
I suggest you drink plenty of water and ensure that you urinate at least 2,5 litres per day until you can have your kidney function tests repeated in a few days time.

Looking forward to hearing from you.

Doc, could you please give me your opinion. An oncologist friend of mine looked at my full bloodwork report and told me the GFR analysis is very difficult to calculate accurate because of several factors. He said my criatinine level of 1.23 was normal, and urea nitrogen of 20 was also within range and not to worry. Do you agree?

Brief Answer:
Yes

Detailed Answer:
Hi again XXXXXXX

It is true that the GFR depends on more than just kidney function, e.g. also body surface, gender and age. If the creatinine and urea are normal, I wouldn't worry about the GFR

Hope this helps. Please let me know if you have any further questions.
