Would Taking Thyroxine Cause Heaviness Above The Chest?
Hi,I am 38yrs old, 72 kilos and was recently diagnosed with a underactive thyroid from my Miscarriage Doctor. I started taking 50mcgs of Thyroxine 2 1/2 weeks ago and last week I noticed a heaviness in my chest above the left breast and to the left. I went to my GP and he said I should stop taking the medicine. I still have the aching / heaviness but it has subsided a lot. I went for a ECG yesterday and all is fine. I don't believe it's my heart but my thyroid that is causing the problem. Should I continue taking the Thyroxine but in a lower dosage? Should I be alarmed about this heaviness or is this one of the side effects of Thyroxine and a underactive Thyroid? Many thanks, Crys
Yes,taking Thyroxine can cause heaviness in the chest. This are less common major side effect of thyroxine and you have been very correct to talk with your doctor immediately. Is very important to know the results of your thyroid tests before taking the decision of stoping or continuing the thyroxine in lower dosage.Even if you are a young woman i suggest a echocardiogram and if the results normal you can restart the thyroxine 25 mcg and very gradually titrate the dose.
