Hello and welcome to health care magic, I am Dr Nilajkumar a consultant gynecologist and I will be helping you in your queries.
Cytotec contains misoprostol and it has been associated with birth defects in some studies. Studies in animals have not documented anomalies but few reports about adverse effects in human babies are there. So adverse effects are possible, though they may not occur in every case. The rate of adverse effect reported is about 4.2% for women exposed to misoprostol with mifepristone [ another abortificient].
If there are any external defects or visible defects they can be detected by an anomaly scan at 18-20 weeks. Genetic defects may be detected using amniocentesis procedure by collecting the amniotic fluid and testing the fetal cells for genetic defects.
I suggest that you discuss this with your doctor and then decide about continuing pregnancy.
Thanks for using HCM. Have a good day. Dr Nilajkumar Bagde Consultant Obstetrics and Gynecology
