Will Lisinopril Cause Dental Problems? What Is The Other Choice?
I take 5 mg. of lisinopril and have for about three years now for hypertension. I hadn t been to a dentist in two years and usually don t ever need much. But I just incurred $5,000 in dental care all for numerous cavities at the gum line in nearly half of my teeth. I was stunned! My dentist suggests it might be the lisinopril. I eat very healthy, vegetarian mostly and practice good hygiene. I m 63. I do experience dry mouth, especially during night. What other medicine for BP might I take instead. I have mild hypertension and am pretty sensitive to medications. It s the only one I take.

Lisinopril is in a class of medications called angiotensin-converting enzyme (ACE) inhibitors. Lisinopril is used alone or in combination with other medications to treat high blood pressure.
This drug (like any other drug) has a large number of possible side effects but it doesn't damage your teeth.Lisinopril doesn't have this side effect.
On the other hand Lisinopril can be the cause of dry mouth you are experiencing.
I can't tell you the right cause of your teeth problems but I can tell you that this isn't due to Lisinopril.
If you don't have any side effect of Lisinopril (such as:-persistent dry cough , dizziness , headache ,excessive tiredness,nausea,diarrhea,weakness,sneezing,runny nose,rash) I don't see any reason why you should stop using it.
If your blood pressure is in normal range with Lisinopril I don't suggest you to change it.
If you experience any side effect of Lisinopril and you want to change your treatment I can suggest you Diovan (Valsartan) 80 mg once a day and montor your blood pressure.
