Will A New Nail Grow In A Child After It Got Split In Half?

5 year old grandaughter had a swingset leg come down on her foot...it smashed her big toe and the nail is split in half..happened yesterday, we have soaked it in betadine, used neosporin and covered it with a bandaid...does she need to go and have the nail removed so a new nail can grow in properly?

Hi,

Thanks for your question. She may have a fracture under the nail and so an Xray would be important to exclude this as she might require antibiotics if this is the case. If the nailed is damaged this may need to be repaired. This would be done under general anaesthetic. The nail would be removed so that the nailed could be repaired and then replaced to keep the base of the nail open for normal growth of the nail underneath.

I hope this answers your questions.

Best wishes
