Why Would One Develop Urine Retention After Having Hemilaminectomy Done To Cure Herniated Disk And Stenosis?

my husband had hemilaminectomy.due to herniated disk and stenosis. During surgery, they needed to repair dura.

After surgery he stayed at hospital for 3 days. Once at home, 3 days lapsed and he developed urine retencion and started leaking CSF. Took him back to hospital, where they did surgery again. He developed bowel and bladder disfuction. Now 17 months later, he still has urine retention and bowel issues. He does self-catherization.

Orthopedic surgeon does not see any problems on MRI. Already seen 3 Urologist, 2 say it will take time to regain urination. Third Urologist did Cystoscopy, Prostate is normal and minimal narrowing of urethra. He is going to perfom TUMT in 2 weeks, hoping it will help with urine retention. He will not perfom TURP since evething looks fine.

My husband experienced retrograde ejaculation, but know is back to normal. He uses Viagra to help with erection.

Do you have any other suggestions?

Hello user,
Hemolamionectomy has certain disadvantages, it causes damage to some nerves, which are inevitable, and among those nerves, the bladder control nerve might also get damaged,, causing urinary retention.

There might also be possibility that the might have been damaged by the compressed spinal cord.

Routine behavioral therapy will help him to regain bladder control, but it will take time.

hope my info helped you
