Why Is My Blood Sugar High After Playing Ice Hockey?

I ve been diabetic for 12 years. I know I have to improve my diet but there are few things that I don t understand and I m reaching out to you for an answer. One, it s not uncommon for me to get a blood sugar reading before bed of 100, during the night it go down lower (i.e. 78) but when I wake up get a reading of 260, why? Second, if I play ice hockey at the end of the session my blood sugar can be as high as 300+. This doesn t happen to that extreme when I run or otherwise exercise. Can you explain. Thanks.

Hello,

The answer to the first question is that you have a phenomenon called Somogyi effect. As your blood sugar is going below normal at night, your body secretes hormones to raise it. Your body secretes too much of hormones that the sugar overshoots. The way to manage it is to reduce the medicine which is making the sugar go down into very low levels. Your treating doctor should be able to do that.
The second question again is related to the hormones which raise the blood sugar ( stress hormones). In a competitive sport you are likely to secrete more than while exercising otherwise.
