Why do I have shortness of breath while doing intense exercises ?

I just started doing intense exercising (I am generally very inactive). Why do I have random, short feelings of shortness of breath? I am doing stairs. I weigh 170 lbs at age 19. It happens within a minute or two of stairs. No asthma .
