What Would Be The Reason Of Infection In Cervical Cancer?

My friend has been diagnosed with Stage 4 cervical cancer. She had a cath removed yesterday and her doctor thought she may have an infection. I just found out that she was admitted to the hospital today and given morphine. She had a fever of 102 yesterday. Why wouldn't the doctor give her an antibiotic for the infection yesterday and why would she be in the hospital for an infection? Why would they give her morphine? I'm not questioning the doctor, I just want to know more about the realities of her cancer.
