I hope you can help. My urine flow is irregular. It is more difficult than normal to start and maintain the flow. This happened last time I was on an ultra low calorie diet. I ve significantly reduced my caloric intake and I ve biking and exercising much more. What can I do?

Urologist 's  Response
Hi,
You have what we term 'voiding Lower Urinary Tract Symptoms'. these usually include hesitancy before initiation of urine flow, slower urination than usual, sense of post-void residue, intermittency of stream with occasional straining.
You have not mentioned your age, but you could probably benefit from use of alpha-blockers such as Tamsulosin. I suggest that before you start using this drug, you get some basic investigations such as Ultrasound of abdomen, with an estimate of post void residue, a urine flow rate estimation and a urine examination for any evidence of infection. These will help guide therapy.
