What Should Be Done When Sonogram Shows Incomplete Abortion After Taking Pills?

Hi - I had a medical abortion (5 weeks pregnant) two weeks ago, which resulted in heavy bleeding and passing of blood clots within five hours. However, after my follow up, the sonogram showed that I still have blood clots. As prescribed, I took the four pills again, but this time, there is barely any bleeding, and it has been been over twelve hours. Does this mean that the pill will be ineffective?

Hello
Thanks for writing to HCM

You can wait for one more day to pass out the clots.
Some times pills are ineffective.
Then dilatation and curettage should be done.Prior to this, repeat ultrasound of pelvis should be done to confirm the clots inside the uterus.
Hope i have answered your query.

Take Care

OBGYN Dr. Aarti Abraham's  Response
Hello
Thanks for writing to us with your health concern.
What you experienced was RPOC.
This is known as retained products of conception.
WHen they measure more than 15 cc, then further surgical abortion might be required.
If they are minimal, then the doctor would prescribe further course of medical abortion to cause complete abortion.
It is not necessary to have a heavy bleed after the four repeat pills.
There could be minimum tissue inside, which might have been expelled with scant bleeding.
Bleeding might get heavier over the coming two days.
To know if the pills were effective or not, a repeat ultrasound scan should be done.
This will confirm if the uterine cavity is empty or not.
Take care.
