What Is The Treatment For Tonsillitis And Strep Throat?

My question is in regards to my right Tonsil. I had cleared up my cold symptoms a week ago today (Last Tuesday). The sypmtoms were just stuffy nose, and a very light cough. A few days pass and (Friday) my right tonsil becomes sore. I dealt with it Friday, Saturday, & Sunday I couldn t take the pain so I went to the ER. I had a strep test that came back negative. The doctor thinks the cold just trickled down & is stuck there. My right tonsil is bright red, lymph nodes are swollen, & my neck as well ( a little stiff). He perscribes me Mucinex, Tylenol, and lozengens. Almost 36 hours into treatment & there is no change. My neck is a little stiffer, but the Tylenol is not helping with the pain. Should I go back to the ER?

Hello,

Since you have swollen lymph nodes, enlarged tonsil (right side), you are suggested to get a repeat throat swab, sputum examination, throat culture, ESR done since the medicines are not working. In the meantime, you are suggested to gargle with salt in warm water 3-4 times a day. Take semi solid food like porridge, oats meals, cornflakes in milk, etc. Give voice rest, do not talk. For pain and discomfort you can take Combiflam or Naproxen after food, one SOS. You can take a course of Ampilox or Doxycycline for 3-5 days. You should get relief but take care of your throat hygiene and care.

Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
