What Is The Treatment For Persistent Cough?

I am 71 year old , non-smoker with CLL for almost 16 years , no medication for CLL just under supervision of
a hematologist. I have never had asthma or heart problems. For the past 2 weeks I have come up with
persistent coughing especially at night and sometimes I feel I am choking. My doctor mentioned it is just a cold
and you will be o.k. prescribed cough sirup which has been of no use. I started taking advair yesterday. Please advise which specialist I must see and how long it is going to take before my coughing stops.
Thanks, John

Pulmonologist 's  Response
Hello dear, thanks for your question on HCM.
I can understand your situation and problem.
You are having chronic cough. Chronic cough in old age with co morbid condition like CLL must be investigated thoroughly.
So better to consult pulmonologist and get done
1. Clinical examination of respiratory system.
2. Chest x ray.
3. PFT ( pulmonary function test ).
4. CT thorax if required.
Following are the possibilities in your case.
1. Lung infection
2. Bronchitis
3. Metastatic spread in lungs.
So chest x ray and CT are needed to rule out infection and metastatic spread.
PFT is needed to rule out bronchitis.
Consult pulmonologist and first diagnose yourself and then start appropriate treatment.
