Hi,I am Dr. Subhankar Chakraborty (Gastroenterologist). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
Hello, I am 36 years old and have had chronic diarrhea now going on 8 weeks. Started out as excess mucous, now it is constant diarrhea, sometimes twice a day, sometimes up to 8 times a day. Also noticed red blood in stools on a few occasions and on others pink mucous. Dairy definitely inflames this and so I have cut it out. Should I try Pepto for a few days while eliminating certain foods? Or is this definitely something worse than lactose intolerance?
Hi. Thanks for your query. Noted the history of a 36 year old, having had chronic diarrhea for 8 weeks, started as excess mucous, 2 to 8 times a day, red blood and pink mucus sometimes in stools, Dairy products cut down helps, wants to know whether to try Pepto - or is worse than lactose intolerance... The simplest tests of stool for three consecutive days can give an idea about the probable diagnosis. Also to go for the following: Trial with an antibiotic and metronidazole for 5 days . Colonoscopy and CT scan of the abdomen helps further. Other tests of blood, particularly for thyroid and liver function is required to rule out thyrotoxicosis. Further tests of lactose intolerance, gluten and so on as per the opinion of a Gastroenterologist.
