What Is The Treatment For Colonic Diverticulosis And Lower Back Pain?

Hi I m a 43 yr old female, my symptoms have been lasting over the last 7 months. I have been running a low grade temp 99 to the highest being 101. This is all day, I keep a diary of it for a few weeks and it seems to be pretty constant, I have had headaches since I was 17yr but since the fever they became increasingly worse, I had confusion, kinda a fog like feeling. Lower back pain. This started when I had bronchitis in December and was on 3 rounds of antibiotics. Then March I tore my RCuff, and was put on. Celebrex. I have had numerous blood test and cultures run, nothing seems to show. I went to a Nerologist and they did a cervical, head, and lumbar MRI. It showed some disk protrusion and pressing on the cord in at C3-C4 and C6-C7, then C7-T1 with narrowing ventral subarachnoid space. T11-T12mild diffuse bulging of the disk. The Nero did a spinal tap thinking I could have chemically induced meningitis, test results only noted protein level right on the border at 45. She passed me back off to the infectious disease Dr. I went to the ER a week before the spinal tap with severe pain in my lower back, the headaches, and constipation that was lasting over a week, after taking a few OT remedies with no success of having a bowel movement All the while still running fever. ER did a abdominal CT w/contrast and results noted my previous gastric bypass(8yr ago) cholecystectomy , appendix removal, possible pancreas divisum, enlarged heterogeneous uterus likely a myomatous with dominant 4.0cm leiomyoma on the right side of uterine fundus and smaller nodules enhancing and these are likely smaller leiomyoma. Then 2.3 cm cyst on left ovary with some marginal enhancement but somewhat modular appearing. Then also noted Colonic diverticulosis.

General Surgeon 's  Response
Hello and Welcome to ‘Ask A Doctor’ service.
I have reviewed your query and here is my advice.

I have gone through your history and do understand your concern. I am of the opinion that you need not to worry much. Your backache seems to be because of disc bulge which anyways should hopefully respond to conservative treatment. You should avoid lifting heavy weights, avoid sudden jerky movements.
Your fever could be because of episodes of diverticulitis which again should be managed conservatively. Surgical management is warranted for refractory cases only. Leomyoma is a benign tumor which can be observed by serial ultrasounds. Surgical option should be reserved for persistent symptoms or rapid increase in size of tumors.
For constipation I would suggest plenty of fluids, high fiber diet and regular exercise. You can also add bulk laxatives.

Wish you a speedy recovery
