Hi,I am Dr. Amitkumar Sharma (Internal Medicine Specialist). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
What Is The Solution For Withdrawal Symptoms From PO Steroids?
I have been on PO steroids prescribed to me by an endocrinologist that were gradually reduced to a total of 20mg daily in divided doses. Adrenal insufficiency was caused by an accident that left me with fractures that left me with a lot of severe chronic pain. The boney fragments did not begin to heal until I was diagnosed with adrenal insufficiency due to the years of stress that overloaded the adrenals. All I want to know is how safe is it for me to wait 1 week without hydrocortisone. My work is very stressful and I am over 70 years of age. I am sure there will be withdrawal symptoms but how severe will they be? YYYY@YYYY
Hi I had gone through the question and understand your concern. See , Steroid use cannot be stopped abruptly; tapering the drug gives the adrenal glands time to return to their normal patterns of secretion. Withdrawal symptoms and signs (weakness, fatigue, decreased appetite, weight loss, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, abdominal pain) can mimic many other medical problems. Hence you should taper the dose gradually to avoid the withdrawal symptoms. I hope this information was of help. Let me know if you have any other queries. Thank you.
