There are several causes of the symptoms that your son is complaining of. They include viral infections, streptococcal pharyngitis
, otitis media
, mumps, measles
Viral infections are common in children whenever there is seasonal change. They usually resolve with only symptomatic treatment. Streptococcal pharyngitis is caused by Streptococcus pyogenes
and usually requires antibiotics for treatment. Mumps and measles are also viral infections with specific clinical presentations and usually require empirical treatment.
For your child, the fever can be taken care of by wet sponging and anti-pyretics such as paracetamol
. The dose of the medication needs to be titrated according to the weight and age of the child. However, if your child has noisy or productive cough or difficulty in breathing, it would be best if you take him to a paediatrician who may start antibiotics depending on the clinical situation.
Hope this helps.
