It can vary, some of my friends started at 10 -11 years old and I started at 13 years - if you want to know when you may start then its best to find out when your mum or your aunts started as it is a good indicator of when you will start. The average age I think is 11.5 - 12 years. It will also occurs right after the growth spurt of adolescence. So, if a girl grew, grew, grew, last year and has slowed down (no more than 2.5 inches a year) then periods are right around the corner.
