What Is The Cause Of Swelling With Purple And Pus Coating On The Tonsils Post Intake Of Tonsillitis Antibiotics ?

I have tonsillitis and was given a course of anti biotics yesterday. I ve noticed the pain is a lot worse today and my tonsils seem to be swollen and purple as well as the puss coating. I m a 31yr old fit and healthy male. Was worried the purple colouring meant bleeding of some sort. The pain is similar to an acute bruise rather than a sore throat .

Dear Gharris Hello I am Dr Sharma ENT surgeon On the basis of info provided it appears to be an acute infection of tonsil. In adults tonsil infections are more severe and can at times convert into an abscess (pus collection) around tonsil called as peritonsillar abscess. However it would be difficult to give a conclusive diagnosis I would advise you to meet a ENT consultant for this problem. Once a complete evaluation is done some tests may be required and that will be the time to talk about treatment. I hope this answers your concern with regards Ravinder sharma

Hi welcome to health care magic forum,

Tonsils are lymphoid system which guards aerodigestive tract form common pathogens.

Any infection called tonsillitis and it could be acute follicular tonsillitis or cryptic tonsillitis or parenchymal tonsillitis .

In your case it seems to be follicular tonsillitis . Purple color is only appearance ,less like to bleed.

Acute tonsillitis always hurt a lot so don't worry and stop looking at mirror . Keep taking antibiotic as prescribed by your doctor.

hi...
u seem to be having follicular tonsillitis...please get a swab culture senstivity done for the tonsils as ur infection is flaring up...u will get to know the bacterial senstivity of ur infection and the right antibiotics can be started...try doing warm saline gargling 4 times a day...and do chlorhexidine gargles once ....
