What Is The Cause Of Persistent Cough?

Since a tonsillectomy some 15 years ago, I have developed many bronchial infections at least three times every winter, some of which have lead to bleeding (4 x). I began smoking two years ago and smoked up to ten cigarettes a day. Since then, I have developed a persistent cough which produces clear sputum with no sign of infection. This cough came for three weeks and went for two and is now back and I'm suffering for two weeks now. I have since had to give up smoking. I also have type 1 diabetes for 37 years. I know the risk of smoking with diabetes but sadly, life often presents challenges that require nicotine support. Can you help diagnose?

thanks for asking your question
I completely understand your question
actually cough is a symptom , can be due to smoking habit
first thing yo be done is quit smoking permanently
smoking itself causes increase in size of mucous secreting cells in bronchus, that inturn produces much of sputum and cough is a mechanism to expectorate that excess of sputum.
you need to consult a pulmonologist who can consider some investigations like chest xray and sone sputum investigations to rule out any other organic disease
have your blood sugar checked frequently and maintain the level by consulting a diabetologist
thanks
feel free to ask more questions
may god bless you with good health
