What Is Causing My Extreme Fatigue, Low Blood Pressure And Dizziness?

It s suspected that I may have Addison s Disease. I recently had a Corticotrosyn test, but it was negated because I had a steroid injection in a joint 3 days before. Now, about 2 weeks after that injection I feel suddenly much worse - extreme fatigue, very low blood pressure, dizzy, short of breath. I don t know if I should consider going to the ER or wait for a Wednesday appt with a specialist. Could that injection have caused a re-bound worsening of the adrenal problem, and worsening symptoms?

Hi,

Steroid drugs are used in the treatment of various inflammatory conditions like arthritis, asthma, allergies, inflammatory bowel diseases like Crohn's disease and ulcerative colitis, Addison's disease, blood disorders, psoriasis, lupus and many more. But, after a single shot of steroid or at times, rapid withdrawal of steroid can lead to a more severe syndrome of adrenal insufficiency and produce worsening clinical symptoms as well as health issues like drops in blood pressure or very low blood pressure, electrolyte imbalances etc.

Again like other medications this medication has some side effects of its own. It may cause fatigue, weakness, nausea, vomiting, headache, sweating, mood swings, insomnia, allergic reactions like itching, rashes, shortness of breath, dizziness etc. If you experience such type of side effects after getting a steroid shot, then you should consult your prescribing doctor immediately for medical help.

Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Internal Medicine Specialist Dr. Panagiotis Zografakis's  Response
Hello,

A rare disorder like Addison's disease requires positive testing to diagnose it since the symptoms associated with it are common symptoms that occur in various other disorders. Low blood pressure and shortness of breath may indicate serious disorders like heart disease, pulmonary embolism, etc. Therefore immediate investigation is required and I suggest you to visit the ER at once.

Worsening symptoms in Addison's disease mean that there are not enough corticosteroids in your body. Having received a steroid injection might have alleviated the symptoms but the symptoms always return after the steroid effect wears off.

I hope I've answered your question. Please let me know if you need further assistance.

Regards,
Dr. Panagiotis Zografakis,
