What Does White Patches On Throat Indicate?

I have had a tonsil infection for over a year. Yes, a year. I just recently enrolled in health insurance. I have been on 4 different antibiotics over the course of the year. Amoxicillan, Cephalexin, Penacillan, and a liquid that I had to swish and swallow. None of it took it away. Now, the tonsil on the right side has turned black and I have white patches in my throat that are circled with a red line.

Hi,

Your clinical history is suggestive of a chronic infection of the tonsils. White patches on the back of the throat and tonsils suggest the presence of some pus due to bacterial infection. Before starting another course of an antibiotic it is advisable to get a culture and sensitivity test of the throat swab to identify the causative agent and determine suitable antibiotic that could provide you long term relief. Please consult your doctor to get this test done.
In the meantime anti-inflammatory medications and warm salt water gargles for 5 days could be helpful.

Hope this helps.

Regards,
Dr. Prasad
