What Does Ureter In Proximity To Cystic Adnexa On Ultrasound Mean?

I had a robotic hysterectomy and lysis of adhesions in January for multiple fibroids and severe adhesions. I also had an ovarian cyst removed at that time that was being monitored for several years with ultrasounds and ca125 s. In June I was having discomfort in back areas around kidneys and under rib cage area and figured it was UTI or kidney infection. gyn sent me for ultrasound which showed normal pelvic sonogram status post hysterectomy and Urine cultural which came back positive and put on antibiotics, repeat culture showed a second infection, new antibiotic, 3rd culture now showed 3rd infection. Gyn sent me to urologist. Wanted to rule out stone. sent for catscan which showed: impression: 1.no evidence of urinary calculi, obstruction, or enhancing renal mass. 2. cystic -appearing right adnexa. Dedicated ultrasound imaging may be considered for further evaluation. 3. diverticulosis without evidence of diverticulitis. 4. small fat containing umbilical hernia. in report above it says the visualized portions of right ureter are non dilated. the right ureter passes in close proximity to the right adnexa which appears cystic with calcification and measuring approximately 15mm. the right ureter is not clearly visualized in this region... The urologist also did a looked in bladder with scope and says looks normal and sent me back to gyn. my concerns that this cystic adnexa did not show in sono from the 6 weeks before and that it is calcified. I am scheduled for another sono but would like some kind of heads up on the possibilities good or bad.

Thank you for the question.

1. The ureter is the tube leading from the kidney to the bladder and comes right under the ovary as it lies against the pelvic sidewall - this is normal
2. A comment that an ovary (part of the adnexa) shows cystic changes is a normal finding. Calcifications in the ovary is probably a benign finding

Overall, these do not sound like cancer, which is probably your biggest concern. You need to keep the visit with your GYN.

I hope that this helps and good luck.
