What Does Unusual High Cylindrical Power Indicate?

Hi, My brother got his eyes tested and found that his Cylindrical power is over -5, the optician said it s unusual for Cylindrical power to go that high and could be because of some internal damage in the eye. My brother is yet to consult an opthalmologist. Could any one please enlighten us on this apparently unusual Cylindrical power ? Anything we should know ?

Ophthalmologist 's  Response
Unusual high cylinder can be mostly due to corneal or lens cause... Most commonly be keratoconus or lenticonus...

Keratoconus is congenital abnormality of cornea which is best managed by RIGID contact lens...

Lenticonus is congenital abnormality in lens which is treated only by surgery : CLEAR LENS extraction + posterior chamber Intra Ocular Lens implantation...

Both of these cases needs Ophthalmologist intervention...
