What Does Swelling Under The Chin Indicate?

I have fairly significant swelling just under my chin, very noticeable & very tender to the touch, worse when I look down. It was sudden onset, woke up with it two days ago. Don't know if it's relevant, but I did have an SI joint rhizotomy two weeks ago. Anything to worry about?

Hi.
Welcome to HEALTHCARE MAGIC..

I have gone through your query and can understand your concern..

As per your complain a considerable swelling under the chin that is tender to touch seems to be most probably due to either swollen submental group of lymph nodes while it can also be due to infection in submental salivary gland..

In case if it is due to lymph nodes, it can be probably due to infection in lymph nodes leading to Reactionary Lympahdenitis..
In case if it is due to salivary glands it can be due to infection in the gland or blockage in the duct by any foreign body or stone formation also known as Sialoliths..

I would suggest you to consult an Oral Surgeon and get evaluated and a thorough clinical evaluation and investigation like x ray or ultrasound can help in diagnosis and treatment can be done accordingly..

You can be advised a course of antibiotics and anti-inflammatory painkillers like Ibuprofen..
Do cool compresses over the swelling..
In case if it is due to salivary gland chew sugar free chewing gum and suck tart candies..

Hope this information helps..

Thanks and regards.
