What Does Swelling And Discoloraton Of Scar After Mole Removal Indicate?

Hi, First, your site came to me as a free site. Can you confirm it is? Otherwise, please do not reply to me.
My husband just had a total knee replacement last Wednesday. 3 months ago, he had a suspicious mole removed on his chest that turned out to be benign but left a 3 inch long x 1/2 inch wide pinkish scar. Today, we noticed that this older scar is changing in color, swelling up a little, and glistening. The knee scar seems to be fine. My question: is it suspicious that this older scar is changing, and could that be a sign of infection? Thank you for your guidance in this matter.

Hi. Thanks for posting your concern at HCM

I would think that it is developing in to a Keloid. Chest and shoulders are common sites for keloids to develop. Genetic factors, infection of wound and tension across the scar predispose to keloid/hypertrophic scar formation.

Keloid becomes raised, itchy and extends beyond the margins of the wound.

Treatment is intralesional injection of a Potent steroid e.g Triamcinolone acetonide. It is long acting steroid and persists in the injected site for 2-3 weeks as a depot preparation.

Injection can be repeated if required every 3 weeks.

take care
regards
