Poly cystic ovarian disease is a condition in which your ovaries have cysts and they get enlarged with compromised ovulation. This is a hyperandrogenic state in which there may me several endocrine abnormalities, skin problems, hirsutism, central obesity, hot flushes along with menstrual problems. Women with PCOD more commonly have endometrial hyperplasia (causing increase in endometrial thickness) and insulin resistance (prone to develop impaired glucose tolerance). Fertility is definitely compromised but not lost completely at this early age. My suggestions for you is that you should marry early and have your baby if you want to do so, before your ovarian function is lost. Another important thing is exercise and diet. You need to check your fat (specially the belly fat, which is there for insulin resistance). A decrease in this and a healthy diet alongwith exercise can do miracles in patients with this disease and believe me, you will never have to go for metformin and other medication if you can fight back with these to weapons- diet and exercise. The dietary advice will be given to you by a specialist in therapeutic nutrition and you may get him/her in a speciality clinic or hospital. Regarding exercise, I would suggest you to have 30 min. session/day of exercise/yoga/brisk walking. then gradually increase the duration. Your BMI target should be well below 22.5 (but above 18.5). You need to check your fasting plasma glucose and TSH levels too. In addition, annual examination to rule out progression of your endometrial hyperplasia to a more serious neoplastic condition. I hope this will help you out initially. If you have any further query you can ask in HCM. Best wishes. Regards. DR. KAUSHIK
