What Does Pain Under The Ribs On The Right Side Indicate?

I am a 23 year old female. Caucasian. 5 1 . I weight 150lbs. Six weeks ago I went to the hospital for bad pain under my right ribs, almost felt like a huge ball was under my ribs. It also hurt to turn my body at my waist, I was leaning to the left and couldn t straighten my body out because it felt like swelling (the ball feeling) under my ribs and my ribs were very sensitive to touch. The ER told me that I had a pulled muscle and they gave me flexeril and sent me home. (Now for some background, I went the the ER for severe chest and side pains about a year ago, after na untra sound they told I had sludge in my gladder. After a few gallbladder cleanses and more ultra sounds and a few xrays my gallbladder was deemed healthy, and i ve had slight pain under my ribs on and off for the past year) So two days ago I had the same pain episode I had six weeks ago, but this time the pain was worse. I go to the ER and at first they think I m in there for pain meds because I m coming in for the same complaint, then the doctor looks at me and orders CT Scan and blood work. The CT comes back with my gallbladder okay, but that I have mesenteric adenitis. The doctor said this is caused my an infection, but since I didn t have a fever he didn t think that it was causing my pain (also said that with MA the pain would be all over my stomach, not just my side, then he gave a symptom sheet for children, not adults, where in adults the symptoms are in the right side). He diagnosed me with a pulled muscle again and gave me motrin and sent me home. Once home I reviewed my blood tests and they show elevated white blood cells, lymph#, and gran#. I also had a urinalysis done and it revealed blood and protien in my urine. I know that these usually signal an infection, so I called the ER and ask about the tests and the doctor told me it didn t mean anything and if I wanted to be treated for an infection to contact my PCP. So my questions are how long can Mesenteric Adenitis last? Are there episodes where the extreme pain can come and go? What can I do for the pain (as I have tried tylenol#3 and motrin, both are okay, but I still feel the swelling under my ribs and a sharp pain when I move the wrong way)?

General Surgeon 's  Response
Hi,

It sounds like you have cholecystitis caused by gallstones or sludge. You should have another ultrasound of your gallbladder. Try Diclofenac for pain relief.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
