What Does Pain In The Feet Indicate?

Hello, I am 63 and in great health...3 weeks ago my foot hurt when putting pressure on it as in walking, out of the blue. No injury. I went to the ER and the xray didn t show any obvious fracture. I followed up with a podiatrist who, based on xray, didn t see a need for further tests and gave me a lidocaine injection between my toes (ouch). I rested my foot, used ice, wore the surgical shoe...some improvement but now the TOP of that foot is puffy and tender/REALLY painful to the touch. The bottom of the foot is fine, no pain with walking (except, the top is so painful I can barely get a shoe on. Feels like I dropped a brick on it, but I didn t. I put Biofreeze and ice on it. What could be the cause of this? I will keep my follow up apt in 2 more weeks. Thanks! I hate being so limited with walking and exercising. Yet I never overdid it before my foot started hurting.

Hello and Welcome to ‘Ask A Doctor’ service.
I have reviewed your query and here is my advice.

The starting pain in the foot looks to be due to a condition called fascitis and that is why the X-ray was normal and your Doctor gave a local injection.
But now it seems that the injection caused local hematoma and/or infection causing the swelling and pain on top of the foot.
I would advise you the following in such a situation:
Consult your Doctor or at ER immediately to get a clinical evaluation, examination and investigations like Ultrasonography or MRI to know the exact cause.
Get started with a proper anti-inflammatory medication, antibiotic will prescribed if needed.
Full rest.
Elevation of the affected foot above heart level in laying down position.

Hope I have answered your query.
Let me know if I can assist you further.
