What Does Enlarged Thyroid Gland?

my mother just got back her ultra sound from the doctor and it reads: The tyroid gland is enlarged. itz texture is heterogeneous with multiple hyperechoic nodules, the biggest one of 35 x 23 mm in te left lobe. the vasculity is slightly increased....she took a blood test and it was stated that she has hyperactive...please i am worried that this might be cancerous. what does this mean?`

I read carefully your query and appreciate your concern regarding to your mother's health.
There may be 2 factors that has caused hyperthyroidism or overactive thyroid:
-The heterogenous texture may be due to an autoimmune pathology (Graves' disease) and the nodule should explored further or;
-The nodule is hyperactive and produces too much hormones. In this case the chances to be malignant are very low.

So the next step that will help to differentiate the above mentioned pathologies would be the scintiscan of the thyroid gland.
